WOSOSI stands for World Song Singers. This small a cappella choir was formed in Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington in 2002 by Bert Van Dijk. Bert led WOSOSI until 2012 and did a great deal to develop the repertoire. Other leaders have been Rawiri Hindle, Naomi Parker and Pam Hughes.
Currently we are led by Nino Raphael, who is a freelance director, composer, teacher and choir leader in Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington.
Throughout our 21 year history, WOSOSI has aimed to retain the same kaupapa: To entertain and engage with our audience and each other, to raise people’s spirits, to celebrate cultural diversity. To sing with ease, form, beauty, connection and wholeness.
Our repertoire includes songs from many African nations, the Pacific, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Iceland, Asia, the Americas, the Pacific, and of course Aotearoa. We love the challenge of singing in many languages and exploring different cultural traditions through music.
Many people have sung with WOSOSI over the past 21 years. The 2024 lineup is excited to present a selection from their extensive repertoire at the Newtown Festival.
