Mana Mokopuna, the Children and Young People’s Commission, is excited to bring a series of engaging and creative activities for young people at this year’s Newtown Festival. Our goal is to amplify young voices and ensure that what matters most to them is heard loud and clear.

The “What Matters Most Kete Korero”, is one activity that offers young people the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas on what matters most in their lives. Every card filled out will be read by the Chief Children’s Commissioner, and strengthens the mahi we do on behalf of young people in Aotearoa.

We’ll also provide a creative space where young people can express themselves through art. Whether they want to draw with chalk on the pavement or use colouring pens and paper, there’s no limit to their creativity.

Young people can also take part in interviews with the Chief Children’s Commissioner, sharing their views on what matters most to them, which will be recorded for social media and advocacy efforts.

Additionally, a group of local students have been invited to share their voices through speeches, poems, songs, or other forms of expression about what matters most to them and how parents can better listen to their needs.

The amazing, Tū Mātau Ora, team will be joining us with their vision of Mātauranga Māori guiding positive outcomes, will share Taonga Tākaro (traditional Māori games and activities). This fun, safe, and engaging space will help educate and empower young people, offering games and activities suitable for all ages and abilities.

We will be celebrating Children’s Day in the Kids Zone, where we’ll be handing out treats to young festival goers. Come along, get creative, and make your voice heard with Mana Mokopuna and Tū Mātau Ora at the Newtown Festival!
